Set the drives to spin down and park the read head when not in use, to reduce cold-weather wear. Alternatively, if you've got NAS rated drives and they aren't idle for long periods, turn off power saving to ramp up the temperature from those constantly-spinning motors.

Unless you lack regular access to your NAS, there are many reasons to use a cold spare over a hot spare... here's one... your hot spare will be needlessly running 24/7 while your NAS is up.

Oct 25, 2017 · This is a 2-bay NAS and my first idea is to setup as 2 JBOD disks, instead of RAID 1, to minimise accidental deletion problems. I can schedule a replication task to copy from disk 1 to disk 2 and have an internal backup so it’s easy to restore just in case.
