First composed as a song by a father-daughter team, this suprising conversation between a tiny ant and a little girl is sure to inspire discussions about caring, kindness, and respect for both animals and humans.

In Hey, Little Ant, the boy observes that ants are unlike humans. He reasons: humans are big and ants are small, humans have feelings and ants do not, and humans have meaningful relationships while ants do not.

Hey, Little Ant is a song-based children’s picture book used throughout the world to teach young children alternatives to violent and bullying behavior and to emphasize the worth of all living things.

Written first as a song in 1992 by Phillip Hoose and his then 9-year-old daughter, Hannah, “Hey, Little Ant” is a rhyming dialogue staged beneath an upraised shoe. The song’s lyrics became a picture book illustrated by Debbie Tilley six years later when it was published by Tricycle Press.
