It seems the Germans flooded fields in Sicily and Italy when they retreated, and Shermans got bogged down most of the time. They offered the suggestion of just stretching the Sherman since more length would help, and the British M4A4 tanks, the longest production Shermans, had no maneuverability issues.

The M4A1(76) model added a new armored filler cover to the rear engine deck plate. This was for the "engine oil tank." The small curved tag seen in the left photo appears to be the same size and shape as the "LUBRICATING OIL" labels used on the M4A2 diesel model.

Jan 27, 2023 · It’s time to call in the latest reinforcement, our M4A1(76)W Sherman medium tank to handle the threat. This is one of the first Shermans with the 76mm gun M1, deployed with U.S. forces and first seeing combat during Operation Cobra in late July 1944.

Three manufacturers built a total of 6,281 M4A1 (75mm) up to January 1944. In common with the M4, the M4A1 used the Wright R-975 "Whirlwind" radial aircraft engine, and many other mechanical details were similar with the M4 version.

Mar 11, 2011 · We (ie the Sharpshooters Museum) have an extensive collection of photographs taken during the course of the Sicily/Italy campaign - shared with the National Army Museum. Whilst there are examples of Sherman Mk II (M4A1), they represent a very small minority within the unit's holding, which was standardised on Sherman Mk IIIs (M4A2).
