The Model 369 had a distinctive teardrop-shaped fuselage that was crashworthy and provided excellent external visibility. Its four-bladed full-articulated main rotor made it particularly agile, and it was suitable for personnel transport, escort and attack missions, and observation.

The Hughes 500/MD 500 series can be traced back to the early 1960s and the issuing of a requirement for a Light Observation Helicopter (LOH) for the United States Army. [3] Following a competitive tendering process, Hughes' Model 369 was selected as the winning bid, triumphing over rival submission from the helicopter manufacturers Bell and Hiller.

The Hughes Tool Company designed the Hughes Model 369, based on the Model 269, to meet these specifications. It received the revised military designation OH‑6 in July 1962. On February 27, 1963, the first OH‑6 (N9696F) made its maiden flight, and US Army trials began at Fort Rucker in Alabama the following November.

The Hughes 500D utilizes a fully articulated five-blade rotor hub retaining the strap pack concept but having five individual “V” shaped strap packs, main rotor assembly. Rotor blades, pitch housings, and links are secured to the hub by laminated steel strap sets.
