Austen Fox Riggs (December 12, 1876 – March 5, 1940) was an American psychiatrist and pioneering researcher in stress response. In 1913, he founded the Austen Riggs Center, a psychiatric treatment facility in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. [1] [2]

Austen George Fox (September 7, 1849 – May 15, 1937) [1] was an American lawyer and philanthropist. Fox was born on September 7, 1849. He was the son of George Henry Fox (1824–1865) and Hannah Clarissa (née Austen) Fox (1830–1860). [2] .

In 1907, New York internist Austen Fox Riggs, MD, was recuperating from tuberculosis at his home in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Influenced by the mental hygiene movement of the time, he developed a system of treatment based on talk therapy combined with a structured routine of daily activities balancing work, play, rest, and exercise.

The Austen Riggs Center is a psychiatric treatment facility in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Founded in 1913 by Austen Fox Riggs as the Stockbridge Institute for the Study and Treatment of Psychoneuroses, it was renamed in his honor on July 21, 1919. [1]

Austen G. Fox, (September 7, 1849 – May 15, 1937) Rho,1869, Phi Alpha 1890-1891, was a prominent New York City lawyer and philanthropist. He was a close friend and contemporary of former U.S. Senator and Secretary of State Elihu Root and served on the Board of the Carnegie Endowment for Peace.

Believe it or not, Austen Fox Riggs II will be celebrating his 80 th birthday November 11th of this year. As former students and colleagues, we are organizing this event, RiggsFest , to honor Austen's contributions to science and to celebrate his birthday.

As early as 1913—ten years before Freud turned his attention to this field—Austen Fox Riggs had developed a fully integrated conceptual system of ego psychology. Between 1913 and 1940 at Stockbridge, Mass., he laid the groundwork for the reeducational treatment of the psychoneuroses and allied states in a tightly organized therapeutic community.
