Several campus buildings, including on-campus faculty housing, were constructed decades ago by students and faculty. Midland is approximately 35 minutes by car from Santa Barbara. It is two hours' drive north of Los Angeles and five hours' drive south of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Midland’s campus renewal plans will preserve simplicity, focus on distinguishing between wants and needs, and commit to living sustainably. They will sustain Midland traditions and empower Midland to continue being an “alternative to the regular thing,” a campus where students and faculty alike feel that they’re right where they want to be.

Midland High School's history goes back to the establishment of Midland County back in 1885. The one-room school house was for all grades. Sixty-four students attended the first school in Midland County. In 1893, a two story brick schoolhouse was built and the top floor was for secondary students.
