In some cases, when variables should only take integer values, we apply integer programming. Moreover, we may introduce integer variables (mostly binary variables) to enrich our formulation and model more complicated situations. Here we will study some widely adopted integer programming formulation techniques.

The discreteness stipulation distinguishes an integer from a linear programming problem. If all the variables are restricted to take only integral values (i.e., p = n), the model is called a pure integer programming problem.
