Mar 18, 2013 · Driftwood produces tannis and humic acid which softens the water and drops your PH. Lake Malawi has hard alkaline water. IMO using driftwood would be counterproductive as you would have to use product and buffers to. Prefect your water chemistry.

The disadvantage of wood in the Malawi cichlid aquarium is that real wood tends to lower pH, which is the opposite of what is desired.

Jul 2, 2020 · Mopani & Malaysian DW are eternal tannin leachers, no matter how long its submerged. IMO, Manzanita is the best DW for an African Cichlid tank. A 50% weekly WC should guard against any substantial water parameter change.

Jan 31, 2013 · It is safe but most don't use it as it tends to lower the pH and soften the water, not good for african cichlids. Guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days. It is okay to have driftwood in an AC aquarium. Just keep in mind that the acids in the wood will lower the ph.
