Jul 8, 2024 · The lake boats are right next to the station, and the old city (Altstadt) is just a couple of minutes away. Gentle walking is easy there, and for just chilling the boats do that perfectly. The route up and over Rigi mentioned by Lola is easy and exquisitely beautiful, and really fun …
Which city--Geneva or Zurich? - Rick Steves Travel Forum
Nov 30, 2013 · I agree with Geneva. Both cities are very expensive hotel-wise, but you can stay just on the other side of the Geneva airport, which is actually France, and the hotels are 40% less. Then, take a lake steamer on Lake Geneva or the train. Go all around the lake. You can stop in Lausanne, Cuilly, Montreaux, etc. The region is breathtaking.
Geneva or Lausanne or Montreux? Advice please - Rick Steves
Jan 25, 2015 · It's beautiful. It's built on a very steep incline going up from the lake but the views are fantastic. Montreux is OK but I find it to be crowded and noisy and a bit squashed between the lake and the elevated highway that goes around the north side of the lake. Geneva is very nice and I love old part of the city but it's a bit big and impersonal.
Self-guided/Supported Bike Tour Recommendations - Rick Steves
Mar 4, 2024 · Donna I've cycled through there. Lake Geneva is on the Rhone river. You can ride the Rhone cycle route south through France from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean sea. A prettier ride though is the upper Rhone through Switzerland, from its source near Furka Pass through the Valais valley to Geneva. Interesting towns and pretty views.
Italy, Switzerland and France - Rick Steves Travel Forum
Feb 2, 2023 · The trip to Geneva from Lyon isn't all that much longer than from Annecy, and it doesn't require a transfer. I'd plan to spend the night in Lyon on Day 12 and Day 13. That way, you save a bit of train time, overall. I don't know that it would help you in any way, but Lausanne and Geneva are very well connected by rail.
Can't decide where to visit - Rick Steves Travel Forum
Feb 24, 2008 · We were in Geneva and found it disappointing, except fro the paddle steamer cruise on Lac Lemans (Lake Geneva. It may be because it has so many international agencies, but we found it somewhat characterless, though we atayed at teh Admiral Hotel in the middle of the small red light district whic provided some colour!
Recommendations for combining France with another country (or …
Jul 12, 2024 · We did a trip combining four days in Switzerland and the rest of the trip in France a few years ago. Details: we flew into Geneva where we rented a car from the French side of the airport. We drove to Lauterbrunnen and explored the Berner-Oberland area for four nights. We then drove into France for the rest of the trip.
What city to stay in Geneva or Montreux - Rick Steves
Oct 13, 2023 · While Geneva itself is fairly interesting, it is far from the main attractions of lake Geneva. Montreux or nearby Vevey are much better bases! Afterwards, to get to Paris, I encourage you to take one of the TGV from Lausanne taking 3hr40min or so (for example at 12:23 on weekdays). It is a bit more scenic and a bit faster than the route via Geneva.
Opinions on Lake Geneva, Brienz, Thun, or Luzerne boat trip
Feb 15, 2019 · If it is a lakeside town with a boat service, then that is the obvious choice. Lake Geneva (lac Léman) is a big lake, mountains are in the distance. Vineyards along the northern (Swiss) shore. Lake Brienz and Lake Thun (Brienzersee and Thunersee) are smaller and have mountains dropping into the lakeside. More "typically Swiss" towns along the ...
help plan an itinerary - Switzerland with kids (Geneva side)
Feb 17, 2025 · Try Swiss Family Fun: Montreux & Lake Geneva region, or Swiss Family of 5: Geneva or Valais. I found both of these blogs to be extremely helpful planning our family trip last summer. We did parts of Germany, Appenzell, Wengen, and Zurich. The Swiss Family of 5 blog, if my memory serves me correctly, is written by a French Swiss mom.
