Items that need to be installed to the PC marked with *, The rest are copied to the mods folder within ".minecraft". Fuck all the mods that need to update every time minecraft updates. All you need to do is open steam, not even needing to add minecraft to steam, and enable xinput and enable the desktop mapping for whichever controller you use. This let's you map your mouse and keyboard controls to however you see fit on your controller.

Then, in your Library, find Minecraft, and (with your controller connected) right click it and choose Edit Steam Controller Configuration. Set all of your buttons to their keyboard equivalents. Now Launch Minecraft via steam. It'll take you to the normal minecraft launcher, but dont worry.

Now you need two different ways of doing it for the two versions. Java: Install Steam. Once installed, add a game and choose the Minecraft launcher (they show you how to do that online if you look for a tutorial).
