Jun 10, 2011 · First they would tie the horse to either side and let them stand there for a moment, then undo the knot and tie it on the other side the same way. I was told it was to stretch the neck. Personally if you just want to stretch it just save the time it takes to knot it and flex the neck from side to side, it would be literally the same thing.

If you want to use a tie down, first tighten a belt around your waist. Now tie it one around your fore head. Now tie a strap between the two and tie your head low, Now try to run. Now try to swim.

In the case of roping horses, it allows the horse to tighten their back muscles so that the jerk on the horn when the rope comes tight is much less likely to injure their back.

Mar 22, 2013 · One horse braces coming out of the turn and one going in. Like I said, they can run a great set without it, but they can run a better set with it. I have an issue with slapping a tie-down on any horse because mostly people use them to cover up training issues such as, high head set, slinging head, or just because it matches their tack set.

We rode 2x in it. She was very frustrated. The 3rd time (about a week later) we rode without it, and she was so nervous, confused and scared she refused to lope/canter.

Whatever bits or head gear someone chooses for their barrel horse is just going to be what suits that horse best - what the horse seems to perform best in.
