813 is an 0-6-0 saddle tank locomotive built in 1900 by Hudswell Clarke for the Port Talbot Railway Company, which later became part of the GWR Great Western Railway. It subsequently saw service at Backworth Colliery in Northumberland. The locomotive is owned by The GWR 813 Preservation Fund.

The GWR 813 Preservation Fund is an organisation that was founded in 1966 to acquire, restore and preserve Port Talbot Railway No. 26 (GWR 813). It is based on the Severn Valley Railway.

Based on several Heritage Railways, the GWR 813 Fund is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of items of rolling stock, particularly carriages, vans and wagons from the Great Western Railway.

In 1975 813 was cosmetically restored to GWR livery and participated as a static exhibit at the Rail 150 Anniversary celebrations at Shildon. Mechanical renovation was completed the following year and the engine returned to steam.

A diminutive 0-6-0 saddle tank with a maximum boiler pressure of just 160psi, 813 was built for shunting in the sidings on the Port Talbot Railway’s network, and for hauling coal trains to main line junctions where larger engines would take them on their onward journey. At 121 years old, 813 is the oldest locomotive operational on the SVR.

The Fund owns 0-6-0ST locomotive GWR 813 (originally Port Talbot Railway No 26), together with an extensive collection of wagons and other rolling stock. When GWR 813 Saddle Tank locomotive was offered for sale by the National Coal Board, it was last surviving item of any form of Port Talbot Railway rolling stock.
