The Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE), until 2014 known as the Directorate-General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO), is a directorate-general of the European Commission. The DG is responsible for the monitoring and implementation of European Union policies and laws on health and food safety.

How does the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety achieve this? The Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety has a specific division that dedicates most of its resources to Commission controls: the department for health and food audits and analysis. Formerly known as the Food and Veterinary Office, it is located in Ireland.

Over the last 25 years, DG SANTE has been at the helm of health and food safety policies in the EU. We have dealt with many challenges – animal health outbreaks, food safety crises and even a global pandemic – while also making our Union a healthier and safer place for citizens.
