Apr 24, 2015 · I've changed cutlass bearings using a tool called a Strut-pro, a threaded puller that presses the old bearing out and then the new one in with the prop shaft in place. The other method requires pulling the prop, disconnecting the shaft coupler and pressing the shaft out of the coupler and removing the shaft, then cutting the bearing to remove it.

Mar 22, 2024 · something's amiss here. Ran boatyards most of my life. We always used Durant machine company puller etc. We pop the prop off and press the old cutlass out. Pop the new cutlass in the freezer for a few hours dip it in dish washing liquid and tap it in using the old cutlass as a drift. A couple of hours all done.

May 2, 2016 · Check your engine mountings, replace all cutlass bearing, check the shaft for wear, if there are worn spots and if both ends are tapered you can change the shaft end over end. Check your shaft log because this is the perfect time to change it, I fitted a new Deep Sea Seal when I did mine and it's brilliant.

Jun 9, 2021 · My cutlass bearing is in a tube extending back to the hull so it is not possible to use a puller. The current replacement method is to remove the prop and then the shaft and then damage the cutlass bearing until it comes out.

Feb 10, 2012 · That boat had V-drives and the shaft couplers were difficult to get to to separate so I used a Strut-pro puller and can highly recommend it. It took me 45 min. a side after the props were off, but I'm old and slow and it was a hot day. An even better way would be to find a strong 20-something with a willingness to pull away at a wrench for a while.
