Each sponge is approximately 8 inches tall and 3 inches in diameter. The current sponge filter is powered by an air pump rated for 30 gallons, and the one I plan to add will use a pump rated for 20 gallons.

Lots of debris came out of it when I rinsed it by squeezing tightly in another bowl of water containing the same water in the aquarium. I put the sponge back and ran the filter and it worked as usual.

Nov 12, 2016 · A sponge filter by itself, unless large and hooked to a powerful pump, won't really suck up too much garbage. Couple that with a HOB and it probably won't suck up any. Personally, Id leave it hooked to the powerhead as itll do a better job that way.

Its bubbling like you would expect but I'm not sure if anything is sucking up through the sponge? I bought a sponge filter rated for a 10 gallon tank even though my tank is only a 5 gallon.
