Dec 12, 2011 · NTSC DV starts its life as 720x480 square pixels. NTSC displays those pixels at a frame ratio of 4:3 (SD) or 16:9 (Widescreen). Those pixels are altered -- stretched wider or narrower -- to accomodate those frame ratios. But, those pixels taken on their own -- when they are just pixels and not displayed as NTSC signals -- are square.

Aug 11, 2005 · However, what's strange about this is that DVD has 2 aspect ratios, 4x3 and 16x9. 720x480 is neither of these. 4x3 = 640x480 16x9 = 854x480 In order for the resulting 720x480 image to match the aspect ratio of the DVD, you must manually adjust the horizontal size of the image downward to 640 for 4x3 or upward to 854 for 16x9.

Apr 29, 2003 · Basically, it's all 720x480 with 16:9 or 2:35:1 widescreen content vertically stretched to fill 720x480. The letter boxed widescreen DVDs are fitted inside 720x480 frame with black bars on top and bottom. You loose resolution because you are using much less than 480 vertical lines in letterboxed format.

Aug 28, 2002 · Okay I was pretty sure I was correct in my thinking that DVD's native resolution is 720x480 ---- and this was how I set up my HTPC connected to my Barco Graphics 400. I was doing some tweeking and HTPC mods last night --- previously I was using powerdvd and had powerstrip set up to 720x480p@72hz on a 4:3 screen.

In both cases I have always thought that both aspect ratios use non-square sampling to fit their images into the 720x480 (NTSC) frame, but using that entire resolution. The player stretches the image as necessary to form the correct aspect ratio.

Jan 10, 2003 · So by running DVD's at 720x480 or 1440x480, you have an even multiple with no scaling errors. 848x480 will introduce horizontal scaling errors, you can easily see this with the Resolution test pattern in the Widescreen Enhanced section of AVIA.
