Jīva (Sanskrit: जीव) or Ātman (/ ˈɑːtmən /; Sanskrit: आत्मन्) is a philosophical term used within Jainism to identify the soul. [1] . As per Jain cosmology, jīva or soul is the principle of sentience and is one of the tattvas or one of the fundamental substances forming part of the universe.

Jiva is Ätmä (soul) and it has three major characteristics; a) consciousness, b) bliss and c) energy. The consciousness is the central quality of soul. The soul has a capacity to experience unlimited consciousness, unlimited bliss and unlimited energy, and once that state is achieved - the soul is liberated.

The jiva which grows, decays, fluctuates, varies, eats, sleeps, awakes, acts, fears, rests, has knowledge and perception, attempts to self defend, and reproduces. These and many more qualities of the jiva are obvious through a physical body when the soul is present in it but when the soul leaves these qualities cease.

Jain philosophy can be described in various ways, but the most acceptable tradition is to describe it in terms of Tattvas or fundamentals. They are: Jiva (soul): All living beings are called Jivas. Jivas have consciousness known as the soul, which is also called the atma (soul – chetan). The soul and body are two different entities.
