Townsville Central State School is the oldest school in Townsville and celebrated its 150th birthday in March 2019. Situated on the site of the original gaol with Castle Hill and Queens Gardens in the background and The Strand just down the road, our school has arguably the best location in the area.

Name Townsville Central School for Boys Description Townsville Central School is the first recognised school in Townsville, under the jurisdiction of the Board of Education. The National School opened on 11 March 1869.

The school officially opened in the building that had been the Burdekin and Flinders Hospital on the Strand. The school was open to boys and girls until 1 January 1876 when it was divided into a Boys, Girls and an Infant School.
