Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve® is located within San Diego city limits and yet remains one of the wildest stretches of land on our Southern California coast!

Please check the Park Updates postings on the main page on trail accessibility. Trails, particularly the steeper Broken Hill, Razor Point, and Beach Trails, are generally closed in the event of rain to prevent soil erosion.

Torrey Pines is one of the most popular State Parks in San Diego. As a result of this, Torrey Pines becomes very crowded during the summer time. The hours between 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM tend to be the busiest hours of the Reserve, so it is best to plan around these times!

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is located between La Jolla and Del Mar, California, north of San Diego. Take Hwy 5 to Carmel Valley Road, go west to North Torrey Pines Rd. Go south (left) about a mile to the Reserve entrance (right) at the foot of the hill.

The plant communities discussed below include the coastal strand, coastal sage scrub, chaparral, Torrey pine woodland, and salt marsh. The riparian and freshwater marsh communities are not included, even though they slice through the coastal strip at various locations.

Torrey pines are believed to be the remnants of an ancient woodland that once flourished along the southern California coast, but now they grow naturally only on this small strip of San Diego coastline and on Santa Rosa Island. Here, trees cling to the face of the crumbling sandstone or stand tall in sheltered canyons.

Expansion of the Park. In 1924, the city council added other pueblo lands to the park. This addition was the result of a request for expansion by the City Park Commission and interested civic groups. The park now included almost 1,000 acres of cliffs, canyons, mesas, and beach.
