Le musée Rodin est un musée assurant depuis 1919 la conservation et la diffusion de l’œuvre d’Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). À travers ses deux sites, l'hôtel Biron de la rue de Varenne dans le 7e arrondissement à Paris et la villa des Brillants à Meudon (Hauts-de-Seine).

Determined to overcome criticism and revitalize the monument genre, Rodin chose to sculpt the Burghers of Calais as six individual figures each facing his own tragic fate, placed at ground level rather than on a heroic pedestal.

The sculptures that Rodin submitted to the show offended the puritanical elements of American society, but attracted the attention of collectors who read about the scandal in the press.

Le Studio Rodin reflects the museum’s mission to preserve, promote, and share the legacy of Auguste Rodin. As the official steward of Rodin’s moral rights, the museum has created a model to showcase 21 sculptures, including 19 works of Auguste Rodin and 2 works by Camille Claudel.

The sculpture garden at the Musée Rodin is an illustration of the subtle harmony between nature and sculpture. From season to season as the various trees and flowers bloom, the natural setting showcases Rodin’s works to their best advantage.

Enlarged in 1904, its colossal version proved even more popular: this image of a man lost in thought, but whose powerful body suggests a great capacity for action, has become one of the most celebrated sculptures ever known.

Since no anecdotal detail identified the lovers, the public called it , an abstract title that expressed its universal character very well. The French state commissioned an enlarged version in marble, which Rodin took nearly ten years to deliver.
