Jun 7, 2011 · Actually ternary is the type of operator (i.e. it has 3 parts). The name of that specific ternary operator is the conditional operator. There just happens to only be one ternary operator in JS so the terms get misused. –

Any operator that works on 3 parts is a ternary operator, just like addition is a binary operator that operates on the preceding and following expressions (e.g. 1+2 the plus operates on 1 and 2), or negation is a unary operator (e.g. -x where the value of x is negated). –

The ?? operator was added to TypeScript 3.7 back in November 2019. And more recently, the ?? operator was included in ES2020, which is supported by Node 14 (released in April 2020). When the nullish coalescing operator ?? is supported, I typically use it instead of the OR operator || (unless there's a good reason not to).

The exception for TypeScript? If myObject was an any, you're back in JavaScript's Wild West and can return it without !!, even if your return type is a Boolean. Keep in mind that these are JSX and TypeScript conventions, not ones inherent to JavaScript. But if you see strange 0s in your rendered JSX, think loose falsy management.
