An Information System is generally integrated and co-ordinate a network of components, which combine together to convert data into information. The information system provides access of information when it is required.

Hence, information systems have six major components: hardware, software, network communications, data, people, and processes, as shown in Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\), going clockwise. Each has a specific role, and all parts must work together for a working information system.

Three activities in an information system produce the information that organizations need to make decisions, control operations, analyze problems, and create new products or services. These activities are input, processing, and output. Input captures or collects raw data from within the organization or from its external environment.
