WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden announced Friday that he was commuting the sentences of almost 2,500 people convicted of nonviolent drug offenses, using his final days in office on a flurry of clemency actions meant to nullify prison terms he deemed too harsh.

The outgoing president is making his final days in office memorable by shattering records with the most pardons ever handed out by a U.S. president.

President Joe Biden will commute the sentences of nearly 2,500 non-violent drug offenders in one of his final official actions before leaving office. The people receiving the commutations have been serving “disproportionately long sentences compared to the sentences they would receive today under current law,

With this action, I have now issued more individual pardons and commutations than any president in U.S. history,' Biden noted in a statement.
