Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma indicated on Tuesday that the Karimganj District will be renamed. The decision was taken during a state cabinet meeting on November 19.

The Assam government on Tuesday decided to change the name of Karimganj district in the Barak Valley to Sribhumi, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The Assam government renamed Karimganj district as ‘Sri Bhoomi’ honoring Tagore’s century-old reference. The Cabinet also finalised panchayat election dates and announced a Global Investment Summit for February 2025.

Karimganj district in Assam will be renamed as Shribumi district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday. The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting presided over by CM Sarma at his office here.

The name change trend has entered the BJP-ruled Assam with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announcing that the Karimganj district in the Barak Valley will now be called Sribhumi. Assam CM Sarma said that the decision was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet.

The Assam government has decided to rename Karimganj district to Sribhumi, fulfilling a long-standing demand inspired by Rabindranath Tagore's description of the region. The state cabinet also announced plans for panchayat elections by February and an investment summit in 2025.
