Scammers are using a hoax called smishing to try to deceive consumers who send packages through the mail. Experts share guidance on how you can avoid this scam.

While USPS offers free tracking tools, customers are required to register online, initiate a test message and provide a tracking number and will not send messages or emails to customers first.

USPS also asks customers to forward the smishing text message to 7726 to assist with reporting the scam phone number. The Postal Inspection Service will contact you if more information is needed.
