Following Kurt Cobain‘s death by suicide in April 1994, the living members of Nirvana went their separate ways, with drummer Dave Grohl and guitarist Pat Smear teaming up in the Foo Fighters and bassist Krist Novoselic pursuing a series of solo and band projects.

The significance of the opening in Ireland is that Cobain had Irish roots himself, having ancestors who emigrated to the United States from Carrickmore, County Tyrone, in 1875. Cobain was even due to perform with Nirvana at Dublin’s RDS Arena a mere three days after he killed himself in April 1994.

Nirvana reunited to perform at the FireAid benefit concert in Los Angeles on Thursday, 30 January, with an unexpected special guest as Kurt Cobain's replacement. Drummer Dave Grohl's 18-year-old daughter Violet took to the stage to sing the band's 1993 track "All Apologies.
