In mid-September, the Unicode Consortium gave the Unicode 15 standard a green light. It included 4,489 new characters, of which 20 were new emoji (31, if you count every skin tone variation).

In total, there are 179 new emoji characters short-listed for inclusion in Emoji 12.0, a new version of our favorite tiny pictures that will be released in the first half of next year.
