Researchers claim breakthrough in step toward making mammoths 'de-extinct' US scientists have created a "woolly" mouse by expressing genetic information gathered from woolly mammoths and elephants, which they see as a step toward bringing the extinct species back to life.

De-extinction company Colossal mixed mammoth and mouse mutations in a single strain to create a shaggy-haired rodent.

Woolly mammoths roamed the frozen tundras of Europe, Asia and North America until they went extinct around 4,000 years ago. Colossal made a splash in 2021 when it unveiled an ambitious plan to revive the woolly mammoth and later the dodo bird.
