Boeing’s 2024 labor strike continues as the company and a key union didn’t make any progress negotiating on Friday. Retirement benefits are a sticking point.

Boeing's union has the aerospace company over a barrel. Boeing can afford to raise wages but only at the cost of a big cut in profits.

That includes around $690 million in lost labor income, an analysis by Bjorn Markeson, an economist for data and analytics software provider Implan, revealed. And the work stoppage has sent ripples through Boeing’s base of more than 1,100 suppliers throughout the state.

The machinists' union announced that discussions to resolve the machinists strike “broke off” without further agreement after the mediated meeting.

There was no progress made on pensions, and the company “would not engage substantively” on issues such as higher pay and quicker wage progression, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers said in a statement on the night of Sept. 27. No further talks are scheduled for now, it said.

Boeing's two-week-old strike has forced aerospace supplier Pathfinder Manufacturing to furlough 14 out of the company's 54 employees, and CEO Dave Trader fears he may need to send more home if the stoppage grinds on.
