LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan state lawmaker told a crowd protesting President Trump’s early actions this week that she underwent elective surgery to remove her reproductive organs. State Rep. Laurie Pohutsky’s account was cheered by the left-leaning protestors and condemned by right-wing social media accounts.

Laurie Pohutsky, D-Livonia, said she had surgery to become voluntarily sterile out of fear for how President Donald Trump’s administration could limit future reproductive health care access.

Lansing — Michigan Rep. Laurie Pohutsky, a Democrat who revealed she underwent voluntary sterilization because of concerns over contraception access under Republican President Donald Trump, said she's been receiving threats after her comments this week spread across the internet.

State lawmaker Laurie Pohutsky revealed she had sterilization surgery amid the second Trump term. She says she has since faced backlash, even a few death threats. Critics believe her decision promotes infertility in young women.

The Michigan state representative announced the decision to have the medical procedure on Wednesday during a protest at the Michigan State Capitol.
