FIFA is reportedly considering the idea of a one-off, 64-team World Cup in 2030 to commemorate the centenary of the tournament, which would mark the second consecutive expansion of the tournament.

Soccer’s governing body will look into another expansion of its marquee event, the most lucrative in sports, after a request by one of its 2030 co-hosts.

“A proposal to analyze a 64-team FIFA World Cup to celebrate the centenary of the FIFA World Cup in 2030 was spontaneously raised by a FIFA Council member in the ‘miscellaneous’ agenda item near the end of the FIFA Council meeting held on March 5, 2025,” a FIFA spokesperson told Reuters.
