The Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium is mourning the loss of a beloved giraffe. The zoo said its 17-year-old female Masai giraffe, Sox, was humanely euthanized on Friday.

Sox's death will have no impact on the zoo's plans to build an $8 million giraffe barn as part of the first phase of a 20-year master plan.

Sox, a Masai giraffe, had been treated for chronic degeneration of bones in her left leg since the summer, zoo officials said in a statement.
