The Year of the Snake will be celebrated across the Midlands, with a number of festivities to mark the Lunar New Year. Millions of people around the world celebrate the event, especially in east and south-east Asia.

While Lunar New Year’s legislatively recognized holiday status in Washington is recent, some local groups have celebrated the holiday for decades. Here’s what’s going on this year.

The Lunar New Year begins Wednesday, but celebrations around the area are spread over multiple weeks, making it easier to find street parades, lion dances, concerts, family-friendly performances, night markets and new beers.

This year, attend Chinatown’s annual parade, shop AAPI makers and artists at pop-up markets, and immerse yourself in art, performances, and history at special museum events and more.

The Connecticut Museum of Culture and History will host its annual Lunar New Year celebration on Feb. 22 at CT State Community College Manchester's Arts, Sciences and Technology Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Live entertainment and crafts will be offered; tickets for the event are free.
