Warnings on cone graphics: The cone of uncertainty graphics from the National Hurricane Center will continue to emphasize that threats extend well beyond their own cone by overlaying wind alerts on them. This has been a practice used on some of our graphics at weather.com for several years.

The list of storm names is created by the World Meteorological Organization well in advance of the hurricane season.

If a storm develops before the start of the season, it will take the name from the current calendar date. If a storm starts before June 1, it will use a name from the 2025 list. If one had popped up before Jan. 1, it would have a name from the 2024 list.

Last year, forecasters accurately predicted an above-average Atlantic hurricane season for 2024. The season consisted of 18 named storms, including seven tropical storms and 11 hurricanes. Beryl, Helene, Kirk, Milton, and Rafael were five major hurricanes of the season.
