Canned tuna sold at Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Costco and other grocery stores nationwide is being recalled over risk of botulism.

Tri-Union Seafoods recalls certain canned tuna due to a lid defect risking botulism. No illnesses reported, but consumers are warned not to eat the product and to seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms.

Cans of tuna sold by major grocery chains in 27 states have been recalled by the Tri-Union Seafoods company over concerns a manufacturing defect with their easy-pull tab lids could allow the clostridium botulinum toxin, which causes botulism, to contaminate the product.

Several different flavors and sizes of tuna produced by California-based Tri-Union Seafoods have been recalled because of possible clostridium botulinum (botulism) contamination. The recall was announced by the Food and Drug Administration Monday which says no illnesses associated with the recalled products have been reported.

The voluntary recall over botulism fears also covers cans sold at Safeway, Harris Teeter, Costco and other major grocery stores in dozens of states.
