Autocar understands that Audi will debut a brand-new R8 in late 2027 as the Audi Sport division's take on the 2026 Lamborghini Temerario

Autocar claims to have knowledge that engineering on the vehicle is officially underway with the backing of Audi chairman Gernot Döllner. The details are theoretically similar in scope to the two previous generations of R8: take the important bits from Lamborghini; temper its character into something more Germanic; and wrap it all in Audi styling.

After a nearly two-decade run, Audi wound down production of its R8 supercar back in 2023, leaving a mid-engined, high-performance hole in the German automaker's lineup. Initially, it seemed like the R8 might be succeeded by an electric supercar inspired by the 2018 PB18 e-tron concept,

As the original Audi R8 (pictured above, right) was to the Lamborghini Gallardo, and the second-gen R8 (pictured above, left) was to the Huracan, so the next-gen R8 will be to the Temerario, reports Autocar,

The Audi R8 may be set to return as soon as 2027, sharing its chassis and powertrain with the Lamborghini Temerario. The news was first reported by Autocar on March 10, which claimed that a new R8 is crucial for Audi's GT racing program.

The Audi R8 may be brought back featuring a new plug-in hybrid powertrain from Lamborghini, according to our sister publication Autocar UK. This new R8 is reportedly set to launch internationally in 2027; Audi rolled off the last R8 supercar from its production line in 2024.

With a four-digit power output, the new R8 Performance will be the most powerful and fastest road-legal Audi ever, surpassing the current titleholder, the e-tron GT RS.

The Audi R8 might not be as dead as we once thought, if a new report from Autocar is correct. Take this information as the anonymously-sourced report that it is, but if true, the R8 could be coming back as an Audi version of the Lamborghini Temerario.

The Audi R8 rode off into the sunset in March last year, marking the end of almost two decades in production. Its time may not have passed yet, however, as a new report claims that Audi may revive the R8 using the chassis and engine from the Lamborghini Temerario.
