Made from an extremely durable wood often used for sword sheaths, the world's first satellite made from wood was launched into space on Monday.

The world’s first wooden satellite, built by Japanese researchers, was launched into space on Tuesday, in an early test of using timber in lunar and Mars exploration.

Data will be sent from the satellite to Japanese researchers to determine if it can withstand extreme changes in temperature.

Called LignoSat, after the Latin word for wood, the satellite launched Monday night aboard a SpaceX mission bound for the International Space Station. It’ll eventually be released into orbit, where instruments will measure how the wood fares under the harsh conditions of space over six months.
