In 2013, Orange Shirt Day was born after she shared her childhood story of her new orange shirt — gifted to her by her grandma — being taken from her at age six, on her first day at the St. Joseph’s Mission in the early 1970s.

The smell of sage and sweetgrass floated in the air Monday over a mostly sombre ceremony to reflect on the legacy of residential schools and remember those who survived — and the thousands who didn't.

"She pushed for having truth and reconciliation day which is on Sept. 30 and is a really good start for Canada and other organizations to be acknowledging and recognizing residential schools," she said. "Along with truth and reconciliation there comes a lot of responsibility."

The Native American Youth and Family Center in Northeast Portland hosted a marketplace ahead of Orange Shirt Day, honoring survivors and victims of residential schools while fostering healing through art and remembrance.
