The outgoing prime minister of Greenland on Thursday said he would summon party leaders to strengthen their rejection of US President Donald Trump’s plan to annex the island territory, following his most recent comments on the issue.

Greenland's center-right Demokraatit party saw a sharp increase in support as it won the country's election on Tuesday. Independence became a central issue as President Trump talked of a U.S. takeover.

The Demokraatit Party's victory could boost Trump's attempts to tap the island's mineral wealth, though their leader said his interest in acquiring Greenland is "a threat to our political independence.
