The first winter storm of the season has left North Texas, but cold temperatures have frozen the water and slush that remained on the ground. TxDOT and cities have been working to clear ice from the roads, but there are still dangerous road conditions.

Tony Hartzel, a Dallas district spokesperson for the Texas Department of Transportation, said the roads in the Dallas area are still fairly passable – but that there could be hotspots.

Black ice is a thin layer that forms on surfaces such as roads, sidewalks and driveways when temperatures are 30 degrees or lower.

The National Weather Service said a tenth of an inch of ice could accumulate on bridges, and some areas could get up to a quarter inch. But the main travel impacts are expected to be from sleet and snow.

North Texas is experiencing a mix of snow and sleet​, causing road closures and traffic delays across the Metroplex.

This week's North Texas snow event will end with a few flurries during Friday's morning commute, leading to hazardous road conditions.

While temperatures will warm up by mid-morning, refreezing remains a concern, particularly north of the Metroplex.

Slick spots and ice are still possible Friday, but North Texas roads are in better condition compared to Thursday.
