The U.N. Security Council has voted unanimously to extend the mandate of the Kenya-led multinational force trying to tackle gang violence in Haiti, after brushing off a call from Haiti’s government to start talks on transforming it into a U.

Kenya's President William Ruto has promised to complete the deployment of a Kenyan-led stabilisation force in Haiti by January, as Haiti's leader suggests boosting the intervention into a larger UN peacekeeping mission.

The United Nations Security Council unanimously voted on 30 September to renew the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission to Haiti for another 12 months but failed to transition it to a fully funded UN peace operation.

The United States had pushed for the mandate to change to a U.N. peacekeeping mission but was countered by China and Russia

The trip by President William Ruto of Kenya came against a bleak backdrop in Haiti, where gangs operate with impunity and the Kenyan peacekeepers remain largely out of sight.

The UN Security Council has extended its authorisation of the Kenya-led multinational policing mission to Haiti, but without any call to transform it into a full UN peacekeeping mission, as requested by Port-au-Prince.

The security assistance mission, while approved by the U.N. Security Council, is not a United Nations operation. The mission has so far made little progress toward helping Haiti restore order with only 400 Kenyan police officers on the ground so far and a shortfall in funding.
