Named after Count Pablo Ubarri, who was awarded the land comprising modern Santurce by King Alfonso XII of Spain in 1880, the district is centered around Ashford Avenue, which extends east-west for about 1.77 miles from the Parque residential area to San Juan Islet, where the Old San Juan historic quarter is located. The development of Condado began with the construction of Casa Mora in 1909 and Dos Hermanos Bridge in 1910 by Hernand and Sosthenes Behn, and the Vanderbilt Hotel by Frederick Vanderbilt in 1919.
