Between the 17th and 19th centuries, Marwari merchants and Shekhawat kings constructed grand havelis in the Shekhawati region. Rich in wealth, affluence, and artistic expression, these merchants sought to outdo one another by building increasingly grand edifices, including homes, temples, and stepwells.
