I only visited the Sculpture Garden and had lunch outside in the Pavilion Cafe. It’s a small sculpture garden, but a perfect place to stop for lunch between visits to the major museums. I thoroughly …Full review by Footloosewomen

Actually the museum is open and free, but, if there is a special exhibit then the would set up a ticketing method online. Preference would be for "members" (i.e. donors) but the tickets are always ( I believe) free to the taxpaying public as the place is part of the Smithsonian (and run by the U.S. Government). European museums charge (a lot) but our DC museums run by the government are all free. Exceptions are those that are private (Newsmuseum, Spy Museum, etc.)
Q:
3 hours minimum.
A:
It depends how crowded it is and what exhibit is there-weekends usually require more time
Q:
How long should I plan on visiting?
A:
I would say 1 to 3 hours depending on your interest in each exhibit. Make sure you visit the sculpture garden.
