Fantastic walk and views along the north shore parts of this trail, particularly around Bailey's Bay. Also did a 12km walk on the trail from Somerset to Warwick - would not recommend that section.Full review by Michael B

My husband and I decided to walk the railway trail in two parts during our 10 day stay in Bermuda. We did the first half (Somerset - Hamilton), it took us around 5 hours and including diverting up t…Full review by Susan R

Questions & answers

Q:
Are you allowed to ride Scooters on the trail?
A:
I don’t believe so. We have taken pedal bikes on various sections of the trail. Although there are some spots that are not passable due to steps of other barriers.
Q:
Jug head what company did you rent bikes from so we can avoid this mistake? Thanks
A:
we got them from Elbow beach so do not use them, try somewhere else.

Hi Birgitta, I was surprised to read the negative reports about barriers, as we walked quite happily for hours with only one case of the pathway being ‘lost’ and that was at Warwick Pond where we had to cross the main road and start again, but nothing too difficult. We got the middle road bus to the lighthouse and walked back eastwards from there as we wanted to see ordinary lives, through normal housing areas, rather than touristy bits. It took us nearly 4 hours to walk back to Hamilton, and although overgrown it was relaxing and interesting. For a more scenic route on another day we took the bus to Wilkinson Memorial Park and walked westwards along the north shore, with a necessary break at Flatts Bridge to get round and back on the trail. In November we mostly had the whole trail to ourselves. Due to lack of time we didn’t go and further west than Gibbs Lighthouse. Is this your first trip? Hope you have a lovely time. Heartily recommend The Lobster Pot for fish dinner in Hamilton

I will be in bermuda this summer and love to walk so can I ask, is the entire railway connected so that is theory if you wanted to walk the entire thing- you could? Were there any good maps of the railway trail available on the island? Thanks

Yes, the entire route is connected, but there are some places where it is a little tricky. The maps that we found, and used, were of the whole island which made them less detailed than ideal. I used my phone (google maps) to fill in the blanks. The railway trail is shown on google maps, so even in those few hundred feet here-and-there where neither map was distinct I could see where the trail picked up and just aimed for it.
Q:
Hi, we are thinking of doing this excursion. Can you tell me if you are driven back to the ship or do you cycle back? Thanx
A:
You will have to contact the vendor that you intend to rent the bicycle from. I walked it on my own. The trail runs almost the entire length of the island. Sections go along vehicular roads.

Q:
Why did Bermuda build a railway in the first place?
A:
The Bermudian elite didn’t want to lose the colony’s appeal to the Americans, hence the ban on motor vehicles passed in 1908. But the problem of transportation...
